The U.N. Security Council on Thursday congratulated the newly-elected Iraqi government and reaffirmed its support for a democratic and unified Iraq. “The Security Council encourages the new government to work tirelessly to promote national reconciliation through dialogue and inclusion and to build an atmosphere in which sectarianism is rejected,” said Congolese Ambassador Gasile Ikouebe, who is also the president of the council this month. The council spoke of the “high expectations” it has for the new government to deliver improvements in security and stability, human rights, development, and economic progress and prosperity.
