European Union plans for boosting energy security should include discussions on developing nuclear power, dpa quoted European Commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso as saying Wednesday. "We must not accept any taboos in this debate," Barroso told reporters. Presenting a new commission "green" paper on bolstering EU energy security and supplies, Barroso said the EU executive would not interfere in governments' decisions on the correct national "energy mix." The commission was not taking sides on the controversial nuclear issue, but "all sources of energy should be considered," he insisted. Several EU states, including Germany under the socialist-green government headed by Gerhard Schroeder, agreed to phase out all nuclear power by 2020. Nuclear power stations currently provide about 30 per cent of German domestic energy needs.
