UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Monday condemned the killing of eight peacekeepers from Guatemala in a clash with rebels in northern Democratic Republic of Congo, dpa reported. The peacekeepers of the UN mission in Congo were trying to flush out rebels of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) in Garamba National Park, about 70 kilometres from the Congolese border with Sudan. The LRA came from northern Uganda, where it has been active for 20 years. Five other peacekeepers were injured in Monday's clash. Annan said in a statement he was "deeply saddened" by the deaths of the peacekeepers and he strongly condemned the actions against the UN troops.
