The condition of Argentina and Real Madrid football legend Alfredo di Stefano remained serious Sunday with doctors saying the 79-year-old will have to undergo a bypass operation following a heart attack, dpa reported. Di Stefano, who has been honorary president of Real Madrid for the past five years, was taken to hospital from his daughter's house in the eastern Spanish city of Sagunt early Saturday complaining of chest pains. He was later transferred to a Valencia clinic where doctors carried out scans. "A bypass operation will be carried out as soon as conditions permit," said the hospital in a statement. Real president Florentino Perez and vice-president Emilio Butragueno travelled to Sagunt Saturday to check on the Argentinian football legend's condition. Di Stefano, who also has Spanish citizenship and will be 80 on July 4, is one of Real Madrid's best-loved and most famous former players, winning five European Cups between 1956 and 1960 as well as as eight league titles between 1954 and 1964. The "blond arrow", as he was known, scored over 400 goals in his 600-plus appearances for the club. Di Stefano led Valencia to the Spanish league title in 1971 as well as the Spanish cup in 1979 and the European Cup Winners Cup a year later.
