At least 258 people were killed in one town of India's Jammu and Kashmir state by the massive earthquake, authorities said on Sunday. This nearly doubled the total death toll from the devastating quake to 558 from 300 in India, where the Himalayan state bordering Pakistan has been worst hit, with many mud and stone houses buried under landslides. "Information is now coming in from far off areas," one official said from the frontier Kupwara town. "We have recovered 258 bodies so far and 100 are wounded in Karnah town." Karnah lies close to the military ceasefire line dividing the two nations.
