Indian troops in the disputed Himalayan territory of Kashmir fought a 24-hour gun battle with separatist rebels that ended Wednesday with 10 of them, a soldier and one civilian reported dead, military sources said. CNN said the clash took place in a forest near the town of Kupwara , about 55 kilometers (40 miles) north of the territory's summer capital of Srinagar. Indian troops have battled separatists for more than a decade in Kashmir, which was divided between India and Pakistan upon independence from Britain in 1947.
