An Iraqi member of parliament was among three people fatally shot Saturday while traveling in a convoy to Baghdad from Mosul, and a second member of parliament was wounded, Iraqi police sources told CNN. The drive-by shooting occurred at about 7 p.m. Saturday (1 p.m. EDT), police said. Faris Nasser Hussein, along with his brother and his driver, were killed in the attack. Haidar Qassem Shanaw was wounded and was being treated. The incident occurred in al-Mashahda, a town about 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Baghdad. In addition, three civilians were killed in a drive-by shooting in central Baquba, according to an official with Diyala province's governorate. The men were gunned down by masked assassins in front of their restaurant about 10 p.m. Saturday, authorities said. The motive behind the killings was unknown. Diyala's provincial council issued a statement saying that security and getting basic services in order in the province are their top priorities. Also Saturday, a U.S. soldier was killed by an improvised explosive device (IED) near Al Asad, Iraq, Multi-National Forces said Sunday.
