Several thousand extra NATO troops are needed in Afghanistan's volatile south, Britain's defense secretary said Monday, and he pledged to commit more British forces. Briefing reporters in London before attending a defense ministers' meeting in Berlin, Germany, John Reid also called for more cooperation between U.S. troops battling Taliban militants and the wider NATO-led international force in Afghanistan. Reid declined to say how many extra troops he would commit to Afghanistan, but stressed it would not affect Britain's deployment in Iraq, The Associated Press reported.
