The European Union on Saturday congratulated Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on his re-election, saying the vote represented progress for democracy in the country. "You have been re-elected on a very ambitious program for comprehensive political, economic and social reform," EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana said. "I wish you every success in this demanding endeavor." Solana said the EU was ready to deepen cooperation with Egypt "in support of these goals, in a spirit of friendship and true partnership." Mubarak won Egypt's first contested presidential election with more than 80 per cent of the votes, The Associated Press reported.
