A Palestinian man was shot dead and three others were injured Tuesday when Israeli troops opened fire at a checkpoint west of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, Palestinian medics and witnesses said to dpa. A group of young men approached an Israeli army checkpoint near the evacuated settlement of Naveh Dekalim when Israeli soldiers opened fire on them, witnesses said. Palestinian medics at Nasser Hospital said that Nemmer al-Sadooni, 22, was killed. One of the injured was in serious condition. A slightly injured witness said an Israeli sniper on the outskirts of the settlement had opened fire at him and the group. However, other witnesses said Israeli soldiers had opened fire after more than 100 men and teenagers threw stones at the checkpoint. The injured had been taken to hospital, he added. The Israeli army is due to withdraw from Naveh Dekalim and hand it over to the Palestinian Authority in mid-September. --SP 0045 Local Time 2145 GMT
