A Russian oil tanker on Saturday slammed into a St. Petersburg bridge, leaking diesel oil into the Neva River in Russia's former imperial capital, officials said. The Yaroslavl tanker loaded with over 3,000 metric tons (3,300 U.S. tons) of diesel oil hit the pier of the Troitsky bridge less than a kilometer (half a mile) away from the Hermitage Museum. The local branch of Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry said that the ship badly damaged its bow and leaked "not a very big amount" of diesel into the river, but gave no further details. Emergency teams were sent to the area to mop up the spill, it said. The accident occurred on the eve of Russia's Navy Day, celebrated by a navy show on the Neva River. Officials said it wouldn't affect the festivities, according to a report of The Associated Press.
