The deputy governor of a tense province north of Baghdad escaped an assassination attempt Saturday after gunmen fired at his convoy, the official said. Diyala's deputy governor, Aouf Rahoumi, said one of his bodyguards was wounded and two cars in his convoy were damaged in the shooting at the entrance to the town of Muqdadiyah, some 90 kilometers (60 miles) northeast of Baghdad, AP reported. Rahoumi's predecessor, Ghassan al-Khadran, escaped an assassination attempt in February, when a suicide attacker rammed his car into his convoy. Insurgents have been targeting government officials because they accuse them of working for the Americans.
