U.S.-led coalition forces released 76 Taliban suspects Saturday as part of a government backed programme offering amnesty to former Taliban insurgents who agree to renounce violence, the U.S. military said. All the prisoners were released from Bagram detention facility, 50 kilometres north of Kabul, and the main U.S. military base in Afghanistan, said Marina Evams, a spokeswoman for the U.S. military, according to DPA. In total 199 prisoners are to be released from U.S. detention centres in Bagram under the programme called Tahkim-e-Solh or strengthening of peace, dpa reported. Hundreds of suspected Taliban were detained after the U.S.-led military coalition forces toppled the extremist Taliban regime in late 2001. --SP 1926 Local Time 1626 GMT
