The U.S-led coalition forces Sunday said troops released 85 detainees from two main detention centres in the war-torn Afghanistan. Spokeswoman Cindy Moore told Deutsche Presse Agentur, dpa, that the release went ahead Sunday in the southern province of Kandahar, main stronghold of the former Taliban spiritual leader Mullah Mohammad Omar, and Bagram air base, main U.S military base. "Seventy were released from Bagram and 15 released from Kandahar," Moore said. They were freed after the coalition assessed that those involved were not a threat to civilians or the Afghan government. Nearly two weeks ago, the U.S military released 17 prisoners from Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. They were officially handed over to Afghan officials in Kabul. Hundreds of suspected Taliban fighters were taken to U.S detention centres in Afghanistan and Cuba, after the U.S-led military coalition began to topple the extremist Taliban regime for denying to hand over Osama bin Laden, who is blamed for the 11 September 2001 attacks in New York and Washington. --SP 2316 Local Time 2016 GMT
