Rebels hiding in a village home in Indian-controlled Kashmir exchanged gunfire with police and paramilitary soldiers Wednesday, leaving four dead. A grenade blast elsewhere injured six people, police said. One rebel, two police officers and a paramilitary soldier died in the clash, said Police Inspector-General S.P. Vaid. The gunfight took place when security forces raided Chakka village after receiving a tip that three rebels were hiding there, The Associated Press reported. Chakka is 180 kilometers (110 miles) northeast of Jammu, the winter capital of Jammu-Kashmir state.
