Officials in the Dominican Republic ordered more than 400 Haitians to cross the border into their homeland after a mob bent on revenge went after Haitian immigrants, an Army officer said Tuesday, dpa reported. "All Haitians who were on the streets were sent to their country to avoid further disasters," said General Pedro Caceres, chief of the 4th Army Brigade. The violence was prompted by a murder and assault of a Dominican couple, allegedly by three Haitian men, in Hatillo Palma, 250 kilometres northwest of Santo Domingo. The three men, armed with machetes, entered the food shop of Martiza Nunez, 31, and Domingo Antonio Luna, 30, Monday afternoon, apparently to steal food. They ended up attacking the couple. The woman was hacked to death, and the man gravely wounded. The violence occurred in front of the couple's three children, ages 9, 11 and 12. Caceres said the mass repatriation was ordered after dozens of Dominican residents set fire late Monday to the belongings of Haitians as they tried to find the perpetrators of the killing. --More 2334 Local Time 2034 GMT
