After the crowd became violent, German police dispersed about 1,000 neo-Nazis from all over the country who rallied Saturday in the eastern city of Leipzig, according to dpa. Riot police also had to keep watch on a similar sized group of mainly leftist opponents who tried to disrupt the rally. A police spokesman said the rightists had begun throwing stones at police, which led to the decision to halt the event. Overnight, police had had to quell a riot by 200 extreme leftists who had gathered in the city to wait for the neo-Nazis. The leftists had erected barricades, set fire to cars and garbage skips and smashed plate-glass windows. There were six arrests.
