Riot police used tear gas to break up a demonstration led by Corsican nationalists Saturday after a few dozen protesters hurled bottles and stones at a police station. The outbreak occurred at the end of an hourlong rally held in support of jailed nationalists in Ajaccio, near the southern tip of the Mediterranean island. Police said 800 people attended, while organizers put the number of protesters at 6,000, AP reported. LCI television said a police officer was injured. Also Saturday, an explosive device damaged a regional agricultural and forestry department building in Bastia, in the north of the island. The building, which was empty at the time, was thought to have been targeted by nationalists as a symbol of the French state. There were no injuries. -- SPA 2343 Local Time 2043 GMT
