The United States remains committed to working with Italian investigators to determine how one of the country's intelligence agents was shot to death by U.S. troops in Iraq, the State Department said Thursday. Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said his government will not sign off on a conclusion by investigators that it doesn't agree with. His statement came after U.S. media reports said the Pentagon was to clear the soldiers of wrongdoing. The results of the investigation have not been released, and U.S. officials say the joint inquiry between the United States and Italy is ongoing. The Italians "took full part in the investigation. They had full access to all the information available," State Department spokesman Adam Ereli said, "and we continue to work very closely with the government of Italy." Berlusconi said the Bush administration was divided over the incident with the Pentagon trying to protect its soldiers and the White House and State Department wanting to smooth over relations with Rome after the March 4 shooting in Baghdad that sparked outrage in Italy. --More 2349 Local Time 2049 GMT
