Zacarias Moussaoui - the only person charged in the United States in connection with the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks - pleaded guilty Friday in federal court and could be sentenced to die, CNN reported. Moussaoui, 36, a French citizen of Moroccan descent, entered the plea to six charges against the advice of his attorneys, who urged the judge in the Virginia courtroom to consider Moussaoui's mental competence before accepting the agreement. Each charge brings a minimum sentence of life in prison. A jury is to determine Moussaoui's sentence unless both prosecutors and the defence agree to have the judge determine the penalty. The charges against Moussaoui are conspiracy to commit acts of terrorism, commit aircraft piracy, destroy aircraft, murder government employees and destroy property. ---SP 2331 Local Time 2031 GMT
