US President George W. Bush has issued a presidential determination granting a waiver to Pakistan on the democracy-related provisions of any enactment, officials said. The waiver has been granted on the "Foreign Operations, Export Financing and Related Programmes Appropriations Act 2005, with respect to Pakistan." The presidential determination states that the action "would facilitate the transition to democratic rule in Pakistan." It added that it was "important to United States efforts to respond to, deter, or prevent acts of international terrorism." Accordingly, the US president said, "I hereby waive, with respect to Pakistan, any such provision." President Bush has "authorized and directed" the secretary of state "to transmit this determination to the Congress and to arrange for its publication in the federal register."
