An avalanche killed one skier from Germany and injured three others Saturday in the western Austrian state of Tyrol, Austria Press Agency reported. The 11:30 a.m. (1030 GMT) snow slide in Wattens Lizum, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) east of the western city of Innsbruck, came soon after the skiers had decided to turn back because of avalanche warnings, APA said. Three helicopters, dogs and a mountain rescue team helped find the victims. Authorities had put the five-step avalanche alert at level three or high in Tyrol on Saturday after a combination of heavy snowfalls and subsequent mild temperatures made snow unstable and prone to breaking away.
