Indian President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam underwent a minor surgical procedure on Monday after falling and fracturing his right shoulder during a walk in the gardens of the presidential palace, a spokesman said. Doctors at a hospital in New Delhi carried out a "non-invasive corrective procedure" to set the shoulder, presidential palace spokesman S.M. Khan said. The president is recovering and his condition is fine, the spokesman said. Kalam slipped while walking in the palace's rain-soaked gardens on Sunday, Khan said earlier Monday. "Doctors have advised him complete rest for a few days and all his appointments for the next few days stand canceled," he said. The 74-year-old president, a rocket scientist widely regarded as the architect of India's missile program, became president in July 2002.
