Snow storms and gale-force winds caused disruptions across Greece Sunday, forcing road closures and shutting down ferry services. Northern Athens experienced snowfall and civil defense officials said heavy rain and snow caused blackouts and cut off telephone services in parts of the Peloponnese, southern Greece. Police said icy conditions on the highway network linking the north and south of the country slowed traffic and motorists were instructed to put anti-skid chains on their tires. Strong winds of more than 100 kph (62 mph) also kept most ferries from operating.
