Heavy snowfall and gale-force winds swept across parts of central and northern Greece on Tuesday, stranding hundreds of drivers and cutting off remote villages. In the northern Athens municipalities of Penteli and Parnitha, kilometres-long queues were reported on motorways as drivers were forced to reduce their speed or stop to fit snow chains. Heavy snowfall in central and northern parts of the country forced the closure of schools and trapped hundreds in remote villages, according to a report of DPA. The sudden wintry weather, with strong winds and lower temperatures, also struck areas in the southern Mediterranean island of Crete, the Sporadic Islands and Evia.
