Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, a leading architect of the Iraq war, said on Friday he had been asked to remain in the Bush administration and will do so. "I have been asked to stay and have accepted," Wolfowitz told Reuters through a spokesman. The White House already has said that Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld would remain in his job. "I can't imagine life after Don Rumsfeld," Wolfowitz said. A spokesman declined to elaborate on how long Wolfowitz might stay into President George W. Bush's second term, which begins Jan. 20. There have been persistent rumors that Wolfowitz might leave the Pentagon's No. 2 job or that he could be tapped for some other high-level position, like United Nations ambassador. ---SP 2250 Local Time 1950 GMT
