A massive earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale was recorded in Antarctic waters south of New Zealand on Friday, the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences reported. The subterranean quake, 33 kilometres below the earth's surface, was felt in New Zealand's lower South Island despite being centred 820 kilometres south-west of the southernmost city of Invercargill. ---SP 2228 Local Time 1928 GMT
