A layer of fresh snow forced organizers to cancel a women's World Cup downhill ski race Sunday, the day after the first speed race fell victim to a storm. The ruling body FIS said it had not yet decided where the two races could be held later in the season. Saturday's race was cancelled because of a storm raging in France, with wind speeds of 150 kilometres per hour measured in the start area of the race in the classic Alpine resort of Val d'Isere. The storm brought heavy snowfall and organizers had no chance to clear the thick, 40-centimetre layer of snow off the piste in time for Sunday's race. The women now hope for better conditions on Tuesday and Wednesday in another famous resort, with a giant slalom and super-g scheduled in St. Moritz, Switzerland.
