A roadside bomb exploded Saturday north of Baghdad killing a U.S. soldier and wounding another, a spokesman said. Master Sgt. Robert Powell said an improvised explosive device detonated at 8:02 a.m. (0502GMT), hitting a truck in a military convoy near Ghalabiyah, about 10 kilometers (6 miles) west if Baqouba, a hotbed of insurgency north of the Iraqi capital. One soldier was killed in the blast, Powell said, while another was injured and evacuated to a military hospital for treatment. His condition was unclear. At least 1,266 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.
