A car bomb exploded Friday near a police station in southwest Baghdad, killing one and injuring at least 11 others, according to the Interior Ministry and hospital officials. Interior Ministry spokesman Col. Adnan Abdul-Rahman said initial reports indicate that five policemen were among the injured when the explosion occurred at 10 a.m. (0700GMT) in the al-Doura neighborhood. The attack took place close to a police station, but the target may have been a patrol nearby, he added. «There were patrols there, they could have been the target.» The wounded, some of whom sustained serious injuries, were taken to al-Yarmuk hospital, he said. No further details were immediately available. A hospital official said 12 people were transferred to the hospital, one of whom died on arrival. The eleven others injured included three in critical condition, she said. Associated Press Television News footage showed two destroyed police SUVs, a crater caused by the explosion, and a charred engine believed to be that of the exploded car.
