Pakistan has been elected to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council at the closely-contested elections held in Montreal, an official statement said. Pakistan's success is being termed as a clear recognition by the international community of the pragmatic policies of the Pakistan government in the civil aviation field, the statement said. It added that the impressive victory came as a result of intensive lobbying effort by the Pakistan delegation and its contribution in ICAO as a responsible state and a partner in its affairs. The Pakistan delegation was led by Defense Secretary Lt-Gen (Retd) Hamid Nawaz. The ICAO is a specialized agency of the United Nations, which was created in 1944 to promote the safe and orderly development of international civil aviation. It sets standards and regulations necessary for aviation safety, security, efficiency and regularity, as well as for aviation environmental protection.
