The Saudi Intellectual Property Authority (SIPA) has announced the nomination acceptance for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia at the General Assembly of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to be the President of the International Union for the Protection of Industrial Property (Paris Union). The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, represented by the Chief Executive Officer of the Saudi Intellectual Property Authority Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Suwailem, was appointed as the President of the International Union for the Protection of Industrial Property (Paris Union) during the opening session of the General Assembly of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) from September 30 to October 9 2019. The WIPO General Assembly is one of the 175 Member States administered by the Organization, and is developing the biennial program and budget of the Secretariat of the Organization with respect to the Union. The Paris Convention was concluded in 1883 and the Kingdom acceded to it in 2004. The nomination was also accepted as the Vice-President of the Union Assembly of Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) represented by the Executive Chairman of the Saudi Intellectual Property Authority Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Suwailem as a Vice-President of the PCT. The PCT Union Assembly is one of the 152 Member States administered by the Organization, the most important of which is to consider and approve the reports and activities of the Director-General of the Union and it provides the Director-General with all necessary guidance on matters within the competence of the Union; approve its three-year budget, approve its final accounts, and appoint the International Searching Authorities. The Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) was concluded in 1970 and the Kingdom acceded to it in 2013. The nomination of the Kingdom was accepted as Vice-President of the Patent Law Treaty (PLT) Union Assembly, represented by the Counselor at the Saudi Intellectual Property Authority (SIPA) Shaya bin Ali Al-Shaya who was appointed to the position of Vice-President of the Patent Law Treaty (PLT). The PLT Union Assembly is one of the 42 member states administered by the organization, its main tasks are to deal with matters relating to the development, application and conduct of the work of the Treaty, including the adoption of international models standards and the amendment of the executive regulations. The Patent Law Treaty (PLT) was concluded in 2000 and the Kingdom acceded to it in 2013, which aims to coordinate and develop formal procedures related to national and regional patent applications and develop those procedures to facilitate their use.
