A fire broke out late Thursday at the Anna-Amalia library in Weimar, threatening a million books including the world's largest "Faust" collection. Flames up to 10 metres high raged in the upper part of the 400- year-old building, known as the Green Castle. The fire was under control two hours later but the extent of the damage was not clear, police said. Duchess Anna Amalia founded the library - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - in 1761-1766. It later fell under the supervision of German playwright Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and is regarded a literary treasure. Part of the artefacts are currently being moved, but a spokeswoman for the Weimar Klassik foundation said historic works remain in the Rococo Hall, which houses collections of precious books, sculptures, paintings, drawings and globes. --SP 0121 Local Time 2221 GMT
