Qaida. A few dozen alleged militants have been jailed in Singapore without trial since late 2001. Tan has led calls to beef up security in the Malacca Straits, which are bordered by Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia. Tan and independent experts have also warned that pirates in the area could join forces with terror groups to attack the global trade network. Last month, naval vessels from Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia began their first coordinated patrols of the waterway. Singapore already deploys armed marshals on some Singapore Airlines flights, while unarmed security men patrol the city-state's extensive subway system.
