Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Medgyessy said on Thursday he would resign on Aug. 27 unless a junior coalition party assured him of their confidence by the end of the day. "Either by tonight the SZDSZ confirms confidence in the prime minister or by Aug. 26 they should create the conditions for electing a new prime minister," Medgyessy told journalists after coalition talks between the liberal SZDSZ and the Socialist Party. He said if this did not happen, he would hand in his resignation to the president on Aug. 27. Earlier, the national news agency MTI reported Medgyessy would resign if a row between the coalition partners over a government reshuffle was not defused. --SP 1953 Local Time 1653 GMT
