A small boat packed with Africans trying to reach Spain's Canary Islands capsized Friday in rough seas, leaving one dead and 32 missing, Spanish authorities said. A police patrol had intercepted the boat and was about 50 meters (yards) away when some of the undocumented migrants stood up, causing their vessel to capsize, the Interior Ministry said. One woman drowned, six other people were rescued and 32 more are missing, the ministry said in a statement. The boat overturned in seas with waves up to three meters (10 feet) high. Two police patrol boats and a helicopter searched the accident site for bodies or survivors. Another boat sailing nearby with 35 Africans was intercepted and everyone aboard was taken into custody, the ministry said. The pre-dawn accident occurred about 13 kilometers (8 miles) off Fuerteventura, one of the islands in the Spanish archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of Africa. -SPA 1326 Local Time 1026 GMT
