Saudi Ambassador to the United Nations Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Wasel thanked the United Kingdom for its initiative to call upon emergency discussion session to highlight the deteriorating humanitarian situation and serious human rights violations in the eastern Ghouta, which is under siege by the Syrian regime and foreign militias cooperating with it. In an address to the Human Rights Council during the meeting on the situation in Syria, Al-Wasel pointed out that the eastern Ghouta is exposed to the same scenario that was exposed to the eastern Aleppo last year. The Syrian regime has intensified its military campaign recently on the eastern Ghouta, besieged since 2013, This is a flagrant violation of international laws and an undermining of international efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis politically in accordance with the principles of the Geneva Declaration and Security Council Resolution 2254. Al-Wasel strongly condemned the serious violations of international humanitarian and human rights laws, the continued denial of access to humanitarian aid, the indiscriminate use of heavy weapons and aerial bombardments and the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime against civilians in Syria, particularly the eastern Ghouta.
