Three inmates were killed and 10 others escaped Sunday during a jailbreak on a southern Philippine island, police said. The detainees on the island of Jolo, 1,000 kilometers south of Manila, sawed off the metal grill of their cell at a police station and jumped down from the building's second floor, said chief superintendent Reuben Theodore Sindac, a regional police director. One inmate was injured and recaptured, while three detainees were killed by police trying to recapture them, Sindac said. The three slain detainees had been arrested on illegal drugs charges. Police and the military are now searching for the 10 who escaped, dpa reported.
