The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) welcomes the resumption of the Syrian talks in Geneva under the auspices of the United Nations. The OIC expresses hope that these talks would lead to positive and constructive results that could contribute to the immediate settlement of the Syrian crisis, which has had serious repercussions on Syria and the region as a whole. The OIC looks forward to these talks culminating in an agreement by the parties concerned on the implementation of a comprehensive cease-fire and the launching of a meaningful political process aimed at establishing a transition authority in Syria consistent with the Geneva I resolution and other relevant Security Council resolutions, particularly 2254 of 18 December 2015. OIC Secretary General Yousef bin Ahmed Al-Othaimeen stated that the peaceful solution is the only option to resolve the Syrian crisis. He underscored the importance of taking the opportunity of the resumption of negotiations to reach a political solution that guarantees political transition and the unity and territorial integrity of Syria, and responds to the legitimate aspirations of all segments of the Syrian people, while putting an end to the current tragic and bloody situation in Syria.
