Two horses being walked by their owner were frightened by the explosion of heavy-duty firecrackers and ran onto a nearby autobahn in western Germany, colliding with a passing car, a police spokesman reported Monday, according to dpa. The driver of the car was seriously injured in the crash. She was pinned for several hours in her demolished vehicle before a fire crew could release her. She is not in life-threatening condition, police said. The horses, however, did not survive. It was not known whether the powerful firecrackers, which are popular in Germany during New Year's celebrations, were intentionally thrown at the horses.
