At least 30 people are dead after an Indian passenger train derailed Sunday in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, dpa cited Indian media reports as saying. The incident - which saw at least 14 carriages derail - took place around 3 am (2130 GMT Saturday) near the area of Pukhrayan on the Patna-Indore express route, according to the Times of India newspaper. A rescue operation is underway to retrieve trapped survivors, but the death toll is expected to rise, emergency authorities said. The reason for the accident was not yet known, India's Minister of Railways said.
