Liberal economist Pedro Pablo Kuczynsksi on Thursday was sworn in as president of Peru until 2021. The 77-year-old called for unity in the struggle for a just and modern Peru, according to dpa. Kuczynski barely defeated right-wing populist Keiko Fujimori, 41, in June elections, taking 50.1 per cent of the vote. The margin - just 41,000 votes out of more than 17 million cast - was the closest race in Peru's history. Fujimori's Popular Force party nevertheless maintained an absolute majority in the congress, with 73 of 130 seats. Fujimori is daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000) who is currently imprisoned for human rights violations.
