Winter arrived late in Spain and Portugal as some 20 centimeters of snow fell on the Sierra de Tramuntana mountain range on the island of Mallorca on Monday, while the north of Portugal saw flooding following heavy rainfall, local media reported. The change of weather came as a shock to inhabitants of the Mediterranean island of Mallorca, who had recently experienced temperatures of around 20 degrees Celsius, dpa reported. On the Spanish mainland more than 20 roads were closed due to snowfall, with hundreds of drivers stuck in their cars for hours near Ourense in the northwestern region of Galicia, which was hit hardest by the bad weather. Northern Portugal meanwhile was suffering heavy flooding after continuous rain, causing more than 2 million euros worth of damage in the Coimbra region alone.
