Andy Murray maintained his bid for year-end world number two honors as the Scot began his campaign at the World Tour Finals with a 6-4, 6-4 defeat of David Ferrer on Monday. The home player who will lead Britain into a Davis Cup final next week against Belgium has the chance to displace Roger Federer on number two for the season if he can win two group matches - or, failing that, if the Swiss does not claim the title on Sunday, dpa reported. The second of the Ilie Nastase Group matches was featuring French Open winner Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland against Rafael Nadal. Murray took 90 minutes to beat Ferrer, breaking in the closing game of each set as he secured his fifth straight win against Spain's battling 33-year-old, the world number six, for an overall 12-6 lead in their series. The Scot finished with 23 winners and 24 unforced errors. His victory was the third match from three so far at the year-end showpiece to end in straight sets after routs on Sunday from Federer and Novak Djokovic.
