Exxon Mobil said it was assessing its response late Thursday to a subpoena issued by the New York attorney general for documents relating to climate change, dpa reported. Ken Cohen, Exxon Mobil's vice president of public and government affairs, confirmed that the company was being investigated by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, but did not elaborate on the content of the request. "It's a broad subpoena dealing with the subject of our involvement in climate change," Cohen told reporters. "We're still reading through it, at the present time." The subpoena was part of an investigation whether the oil company had deliberately misled the public or investors about climate change risks, The New York Times reported, citing unnamed sources. The inquiry, which covers the period since the 1970s, aims to determine whether Exxon Mobil had funded groups opposing climate science and had misled investors about the financial risks of investing in fossil fuels, according to the paper. Cohen defended his company's record on supporting climate science. "Through the beginning of the '70s running through the present time, we have been actively supporting the development of science in this issue, and our support for that scientific inquiry has increased over the decades," he said. -- SPA 03:31 LOCAL TIME 00:31 GMT تغريد
