AlHijjah 22, 1436, Oct 6, 2015, SPA -- Typhoon Mujigae has wreaked havoc in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, affecting over 1.72 million people, local authorities said Tuesday.
A total of 36 counties in 10 cities in the region have been hit by the typhoon. One person in the regional capital of Nanning was killed by a fallen tree, and over 100,000 people have been evacuated, Xinhua reported.
The disaster inflicted direct economic losses of 708 million yuan (over 111 million U. S. dollars). A total of 332 houses have been damaged and 73,480 hectares of farmland destroyed, according to local civil affairs department.
The typhoon has cut off electricity to over 1.15 million households in Guangxi with some 1.07 million having their power supply restored as of Tuesday morning.
Since Mujigae landed in southern China Sunday, at least 31 people have died or remain missing and more than 200 have been injured.
In Guangdong, three people are known to have drowned and four others are missing after two fishing boats sank Sunday. Another person was killed when a building collapsed.
Tornadoes caused by the typhoon have damaged houses and destroyed infrastructure in Guangzhou, the provincial capital, and the city of Foshan, killing six people.
The typhoon has affected 3.16 million residents in 25 counties in Guangdong, with nearly 150,000 people evacuated.
Inflicting direct economic loss of 12.5 billion yuan, it has damaged nearly 196,000 hectares of farmland in the province.
Mujigae has caused a direct economic loss of 136 million yuan to south China's Hainan Province, affecting 489,000 people in seven cities and counties, local authorities said.
