US law enforcement officials were investigating on Monday to find out whether two convicted murderers who escaped from a maximum-security prison in New York had any inside help, according to dpa. The two inmates were discovered missing from their cells at Clinton Correctional Facility, close to border with Canada, on Saturday morning. "I think they had help," New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said on Monday, according to The New York Times. "I don't think they could have acquired the equipment they needed to do this without help." Investigators on Monday also questioned a female employee who works at the tailoring section of the jail. The woman seemed to know the two inmates, David Sweat, 34, and Richard Matt, 48, "very well," according to CNN. The two men were in a section of the prison where there are fewer restrictions, news reports said. They also might have taken advantage of construction work at the prison to disguise the noise of their activity. Despite a 100,000 dollar reward and a manhunt involving some 250 law enforcement personnel, Sweat and Matt were still on the loose. US law enforcement agencies have widened the search to all states as Cuomo said that the fugitives could be "anywhere in the country." The search also includes areas in Canada and Mexico, where Matt once lived. Sweat was sentenced to life for killing a sheriff's deputy, and Matt was sent to jail for 25 years to life for three counts of murder, three counts of kidnapping and two counts of robbery.
