Dr. Abdulaziz bin Hamad Al-Owaishiq, the Assistant Secretary General for foreign affairs of the Riyadh-based GCC, described the GCC - U.S. summit, which wrapped up in Camp David yesterday, as historic and successful and has laid the foundation stone for a strategic partnership, a new principle in the relation between the two sides. In a statement to SPA here today, Al-Owaishiq said Camp David summit has gathered for the first time leaders of the GCC states with U.S. President Barack Obama. He said the success of Camp David summit encouraged the GCC leaders and U.S. president to decide to hold the event on regular bases, citing identity of viewpoints on most of the issues on the agenda. He quoted the U.S. president as reiterating his commitment to the security of the GCC countries and the region. He said the two sides agreed to solve the region's current thorny issues, including the crises in Syria, Iraq and Libya. Al-Owaishiq said the U.S. has briefed the GCC leaders on the progress of the Iranian nuclear file with the GCC raising several questions on the extent and guarantees of Iran's commitment to the tentative arrangement 5+1. Camp David summit has laid the ground for the first time for a strategic partnership between the United States and the GCC countries where the two sides agreed to form ministerial level and technical committees in all fields to guarantee the continuation and follow-up of implementation of the agreement, he concluded.
