Honda Motor Co was to recall 4.89 million vehicles globally due to possible defective airbags, the carmaker said Thursday, according to dpa. The recall includes 1.74 million vehicles in Japan, of models such as the Fit and Accord Hybrid. But it does not affect cars in North America, a Honda spokeswoman said. The faulty airbags produced by Takata Corp were reportedly linked to at least six deaths in the United States and Malaysia. A malfunctioning inflator may have caused some airbags to rupture and spray metal fragments at drivers and passengers. On Wednesday, Toyota Motor Corp and Nissan Motor Co said they would recall 6.56 million cars due to the same problem. Honda's previous recall over the airbags was of 400,000 cars in December. Honda said the total number after Thursday's recall would be 11.4 million cars.
