More than 4,200 migrants were rescued by European ships in several operations in the Mediterranean, the Italian and Greek coastguards reported Sunday. The Italian coastguard said some 3,427 migrants were rescued in 16 operations off the coast of Libya overnight. A French rescue ship assisted with the operation. Another 220 arrived in Lampedusa accompanied by coast guard vessels. The Greek coast guard said it had rescued 530 migrants. Most came from Syria, Somalia and Afghanistan, dpa reported.
